Refugee passport

A refugee passport is a travel document for people who are recognised as refugees in the Netherlands. It is also proof of identity. A refugee passport cannot be used to travel to the country of origin.

Your refugee passport can be used to travel abroad. For many countries you will still need a visa. The embassy of the country you are travelling to has further information about this. Please take a look at the website of the central government.

A refugee passport can be applied for by making an appointment.

  • You are registered in the Key Registration of Persons (BRP) of the municipality of Alkmaar.
  • A refugee passport is valid for a maximum of 5 years. The exact period of validity depends on your residence status.
