RNI - Registering for a job or short stay

  • Are you staying in the Netherlands for less than 4 months?
  • Do you live abroad and do you need a citizen service number (BSN in Dutch)? Is this for matters you need to arrange with the Dutch government?

In that case you can register as a non-resident. You will receive a BSN. Also, your data will be included in the Non-Residents Registration (RNI in Dutch). To arrange this, you need to make an appointment with the Municipality of Alkmaar.

English:

Alkmaar is from 01-01-2026 an official RNI desk for people with a European or EEA passport. This means that if you have an EU/EEA passport, you can register in the Non-Residents Registration (RNI) in Alkmaar.

Alkmaar no longer handles RNI registrations for people with a non-European passport. If you do not have an EU/EEA passport, you can register only at the RNI desks in Breda or Venlo.

If you are staying in the Netherlands for more than 4 months, you must register in the Municipal Personal Records Database  (BRP in Dutch).

When you move abroad, some data in the RNI will no longer be updated.

This concerns data that changes after you have left for abroad. This data will only be updated again when you register in the Netherlands again. This concerns, for example, your marital status or your children.
